"This sonata, beloved by many musicians, was written in one of Mozart's busiest years when he wrote his last three great symphonies. He was short of money and may have written this sonata "for beginners" for some quick sales, although the work was only published after his death.Concert pianists do not find it "facile" at all, as its transparency and sophisticated simplicity is difficult to bring off in a Concert Hall. Both in sound and technique the work seems better suited to the Harp.
A manuscript in the hand of Francois Petrini proves that at least he himself performed it on the Harp. Petrini was the son of the Harpist to Frederick the Great, the teacher of Hinner (Marie Antoinette's Harp teacher) and dedicated many of his compositions to the Princesse de Lamballe, the Queen's best friend.Harpists should consult the notes at the back of this volume, as the pedalling has been worked out so that the piece can be performed on a single action Harp. Modern Harpists might like to use different enharmonics for the double action pedal Harp. The beautiful slow movement can be played by itself. The poetry and inner passion in the development section always creates a big musical impact on the listeners."
